MNS activists vandalise mobile shops, Raj says don't force Hindi on us

A day after the Supreme Court asked Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray to desist from making provocative speeches targeting north Indians, members of his outfit vandalised two outlets of Airtel in Bandra and Thane and an Aircel shop in Khar as the telecom managements had allegedly failed to include Marathi in the IVR (Interactive Voice Recorder).

This came even as the MNS chief said barring Airtel, all the telecom companies had implemented the use of Marathi in their call centres. "Everyone should keep a vigil on the implementation and use of Marathi. Airtel had said that there were some technical glitches in implementing Marathi, and asked for time. Their deadline ends now," said Raj at the party's fourth foundation day on Tuesday.

By late evening, after the attacks at Airtel and Aircel outlets, MNS leaders claimed success and announced that the companies had assured use of Marathi by Wednesday.

An Airtel spokesperson said, "Only two stores, one in Bandra and the other in Thane, were attacked. However, we already have Marathi in our IVR, so the question of protesting did not arise at all." Aircel management was unavailable for comment. While Senior Inspector Prakash George from the Bandra police station said a complaint had been lodged in the incident, Inspector B Mukhedkar from the Khar police station said, "the (Aircel) shop (on Link road) management does not have any complaint in the matter".

Speaking at the party function, Thackeray reiterated that the party would not give up its stand on Marathi issue. "It (Hindi) is not a rashtrabhasha (national language). It is like any other language in the country," he said, adding that Hindi should not be forced upon them.

He acknowledged that the media attention he and his party received was one of the major factors in their growth. "The Marathi people have put faith in us... our agitations and issues. I want to thank TV channels and newspapers as they conveyed to people across the state what we were saying, thereby motivating people to trust us."
