What is Daffodil Day?
Daffodil Day is a time of hope, support, and remembrance.
Daffodil Day was first held in New Zealand in 1990 and is the Cancer Society's main promotional and fundraising event of the year. In the build up to the day the Society highlights the work it is doing in the community - nursing support, patient accommodation, health promotion programmes and cancer research - and seeks support from the public so that it can continue its work.

When is Daffodil Day?
Daffodil Day is always held on the last Friday of August, this year being held on Friday 25th August. However Daffodil Day activities go on for more than just one day. The build up to Daffodil Day takes place throughout the entire month of August.

The importance of Daffodil Day?
By giving a donation for a daffodil you are supporting the Cancer Society of New Zealand to fund scientific research into the causes of and treatments for cancer - to provide support to people with cancer and their families, and to enable public education about cancer.

Lapel Daffodils are available to the public on Daffodil Day from volunteer street collectors.

Corporates and businesses can participate by ordering bunches of fresh daffodils and Daffodil collection boxes to sell or display at your workplace. Follow the links to order in your flowers or box.

Why the Daffodil?
The daffodil was chosen because of its reputation as a hardy annual flower that can push its way through the frozen earth after a long hard winter and herald the new life and growth of spring. The Cancer Society of New Zealand chose the daffodil because it symbolises the struggle people have with cancer and that with research and healthier lifestyles there is hope.

The New Zealand Cancer Society first introduced Daffodil Day using the daffodil to New Zealand in 1990 and all of the events across the country for Daffodil Day use the daffodils as a central focus. With its joyful symbolism the daffodil captures the hearts of New Zealanders – young and old. It taps into our generous spirit turning the day into a cherished annual event. The image of cancer has undergone a transformation since the first Daffodil Day in New Zealand 15 years ago. In some ways this has been due to the adoption of the daffodil as a symbol of rebirth, hope and happier times ahead.
