Short for logical unit number, a unique identifier used on a SCSI bus to distinguish between devices that share the same bus. SCSI is a parallel interface that allows up to 16 devices to be connected along a single cable. The cable and the host adapter form the SCSI bus, and this operates independently of the rest of the computer. Each of the eight devices is given a unique address by the SCSI BIOS, ranging from 0 to 7 for an 8-bit bus or 0 to 15 for a 16-bit bus. Devices that request I/O processes are called initiators. Targets are devices that perform operations requested by initiators. Each target can accommodate up to eight other devices, known as logical units, and each is assigned an ***. Commands that are sent to the SCSI controller identify devices based on their LUNs.

Logical Unit Number Masking or *** masking is an authorization process that makes a *** available to some hosts and unavailable to other hosts.
The security benefits are limited in that with many HBAs it is possible to forge source addresses (WWNs/MACs/IPs). However, it is mainly implemented not as a security measure per se, but rather as protection against misbehaving servers from corrupting disks belonging to other servers. For example, Windows servers attached to a SAN will under some conditions corrupt non-Windows (Unix, Linux, |NetWare) volumes on the SAN by attempting to write Windows volume labels to them. By hiding the other LUNs from the Windows server, this can be prevented, since the Windows server does not even realise the other LUNs exist.

With HP StorageWorks Cache *** XP, you can speed up access to mission-critical data. Whether you are running an e-commerce site, a business-to-business portal, or large databases, the rapid flow of information is important. Cache *** XP is the answer for heavily accessed LUNs, like database logs or index files. Cache memory for Cache *** XP can be set as low as one logical block or as high as 512 MB.

I remember this, during my study days in US, we used to make fun of this word, but had hard time writing code for this.
