Either you guys never understood India, or everything outside the boundry of India is a surprise.
Commercial capital of India (Mumbai) is atleast more honest (http://blogs.rediff.com/rahulwrites/2008/12/22/honesty-in-india/) than New York and London.
The father of nation was the biggest advocate of honesty. But he must be having hell of a time in heaven by knowing that people are more interested in his sex (http://www.fundoozone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26195) life :) than what he really stood for.

I definitly agree that Mumbai is much honest city than other city in India but the average level of honesty in NYC/London like places is still better than Mumbai.

Please don't pass judgment about my understanding of India.
There are some honest people in India, but as a society we are a corrupt lot. This is my experience as well as evident by report of Transparency International. To me being honest is an attitude which is lacking here. In general people here are apathetic and indifferent towards other's needs.

I overlooked the fact that in survey also, 6 guys didn't get their mobile back.

And they have all the right to pass judgement about India.

Couple of weeks back I was travelling in a private taxi which did't had tourist permit or some document like that. At Kartanaka-Andhra border, the driver was smart enough to put the taxi very close a tourist bus and sped off as soon as the bus was cleared. When I asked the driver of its consequences, he assured me, on return we just have to pay a bribe of 100 or so; and it would be ok and why waste 1400 for a permit which is valid for a year and would be used for this trip only. It looked logical to my Indian mind on Indian soil.
On return, as expected, we were caught. The driver tried to bribe the policeman from 100 to 1000. But no way, and was threatened of legal consequences if uttered one more word. I ended up paying for permit and fine and charges totalling to 2400; at a place is which is normally considered as hub of corruption. Please wish me better luck next time.

Now just have a look at the other half........(maza aayega)
we all have seen police jeep running here and there 24 x 7....:D do u know only 1700/- per month is Sanctioned for diesel....WTF :w00t: great average those jeeps provide ....
"
1stly they have to perform the encounter........the procedure starts frm tracing them which includes sleeping on streets/rikshaw-pulling/etc/etc
then shoot them at the appropriate point (saving ur life)
then performing the PM (postmortem) at own expense ....
(dont forget,,,they perform their last right also) ye alag baat hai ki dead body cycle rikshaw se "electric cremation ground" pe laayi jaati hai aur generally rikshaw puller ko paise nahi diye jaate hain (ab kya kahoge isko??? cause government only gives 80/- per dead body of the encountered)
hardly makes any difference its "thokia" "nirbhay" or any other.....
in short:- sarkaar chadarmod hai,,,fund degi nahi,,police se xpectation hogi ki harry potter banke jaadoo ki chadi ghuma ke sab theek kar de

To me being honest is an attitude . . .
Now that’s few words which I fully agree with.
Also, honest has nothing to do with ones’ profession, circumstances, nationality or religion or even the government batta he or his organization receives.
This happened to one of my friends.
He caught a taxi from a hotel to airport. While leaving hotel, he asked the bell boy the approximate fare to airport, he was told about 75 bucks. On arriving at airport, taxi driver asked for 90. This guy got irritated. He insisted on paying 75. He would have paid 15 extra as a tip as the driver was very courteous during the trip and helped him to offload language and load it on trolley. But when driver asked for 90, he felt as being cheated and paid exact 75 after much argument and walked into airport.
Now you know these days checking in is a big ritual. All sort of scanning and checking. While he was waiting for his turn in queue, he saw the fare board above the airport taxi counter. He regretted misbehaving with taxi driver and giving only 75, as the fare as per that board is 90 (that’s from airport to the region where the hotel was). He felt very uneasy, but its bit late to rectify the situation.
After about half an hour or so, when his turn was about to come at check-in counter, he searched for his blackberry to retrieve his eticket. Its not on him. He got panicked, and he realized, he forgot it in taxi.
No hope, but as an obvious reaction, he ran towards the departure gate. To his extreme surprise, the taxi driver was there and talking to a policeman. He can see him through the opaque glass wall (one way visibility). He can see it clearly the taxi driver is requesting the policeman either to let him in or to send the phone to its owner. Now, again, because of the security checkings, he can’t go out unless he decides not to fly that day. But somehow he managed to explain the situation to the guy at screening counter and showed him the taxi driver. This screening guy didn’t allow my friend to go out; but he brought the phone.
Now look at the scene. Taxi driver was not paid his full fare. He cannot park his taxi on the ‘drop off’ area, runs the risk of being fined for illegal parking. He has to take his taxi to airport parking. Airport parkings are chargeable and at a premium. This taxi driver paid the parking fee from his under-paid fare; only to return the phone to its owner.
Scenes location is a city in middle east and the taxi driver is Pakistani.
So I guess, if a German carries a geometry box along with fishing equipment, catches a fish, mutilates it while taking off the hook and then measures it while the fish is outside water and checks it length and breadth and then compares with the marine ecological department's standard and takes calculator to see if the net result between standard and actual is plus or minus and then decides to keep or let go; shouldn’t be taken as an excuse to ridicule Indians for their honesty.

lessons learnt from various stories/comments & some fundoo proposals-
1. German people are unaware of the fact that small fishes are easier to cook and hence consume lesser energy, thereby reducing the greenhouse gases, thereby protecting the environment. Hence, Germans should be prosecuted for increasing global warming.
2. Firms all over the world shall export fishnets to Germany so that Germans can save their time & effort. Alternately, fishing rods with multiple hooks may also be invented.
3. Mahatma Gandhi should be considered as Indian Casanova and 2nd Oct may be celebrated as valentine day.
4. Transparent glass panes should be used at airports so that passengers, who have left something in the car which came to drop them, can see the car easily. Also, microphones with speakers in the "drop only"/parking zone may be installed so that these people may communicate with the drivers easily.
5. Special gates for taxi drivers may be built at airports so that they can be rewarded for their honesty.
6. One should not believe bell boys employed in hotels.
7. One should always carry a printout of the e-tkt.
8. Airport parkings should be made free.
9. Hubs of corruption are dynamic & not static.
10. Policemen threatening people of legal consequences are a threat to society and hence may be relieved of duty with immediate effect.
11. Dengu paai has acquainted many police wallas.
12. The technology used by the drivers of police jeeps must be patented by the UP Govt.
13. Police wallas can hire Kallu Kasaai & Madrasi haqeem for carrying out PMs.
14. Govt. shall increase the amount given to police/encounter. This will encourage police to kill more people thereby decreasing the population, which in turn shall decrease the ever-increasing pressure on our precious natural resources.
15. Officials of UP Police must be sent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for training to increase their efficiency.
