Any Predictions ? Can the Men in Blue get the trophy ?

MS Dhoni, India's captain, has admitted that sloppy fielding and inconsistent bowling were two areas he was "concerned" about as the team prepared to leave Mumbai for the Champions Trophy, which starts in South Africa on September 22. India recently spent a day on top of the ICC's ODI rankings during the Compaq Cup in Sri Lanka and Dhoni wanted more consistency from his players in order to regain the No. 1 spot.

"We have done well in patches. It is not that we are consistently doing well game after game" Dhoni said. He identified bowling as a problem area, saying the bowlers had "scope to improve" in the middle and final overs.

The other deficient discipline was India's fielding. Earlier this week, India won the Compaq Cup final against Sri Lanka thanks to a century from Sachin Tendulkar and a five-for from Harbhajan Singh but their fielders dropped two easy catches and squandered three run-out opportunities. Dhoni himself missed a stumping.

"We need to raise our fielding standards," Dhoni said bluntly. "It has gone down a bit for whatever reason. It has proved costly more often not. We are missing run-out opportunities and have dropped a few catches which could prove costly in any game. We are a bit concerned. Even our ground fielding, especially the boundary fielders, can make it hard for the opponents to get those extra runs."

Dhoni said that the fielders needed to be more proactive and reduce every scoring opportunity for the opposition. "If we can cut down as many as 20 runs from the opposition total that will be a big achievement."

Considering India have won their last six ODI series played in the last two years, Dhoni's worries might seem misplaced, but he is not happy riding on past glory. His pragmatism was clear when he spoke about the forthcoming challenge in South Africa.

"We are in a tough group so it would be important not to allow any slip ups and perform well right from the beginning," he said. India are pooled with Australia, Pakistan and West Indies in Group A and open their campaign with a high-pressure encounter against their neighbours at Centurion on September 26.

Dhoni, however, said he was not concerned by the "pressure of expectation". One of the reasons, according to Dhoni, India were doing well was that they weren't bothered by expectation levels because they knew that if they won the rest would take care of itself. "We think about how well-prepared we are for the games and focus on the small aspects like fitness, mental conditioning."

On the subject of player fitness, Dhoni welcomed the return of Gautam Gambhir after the opener had to pull out of the tri-series in Sri Lanka due to a groin injury. Gambhir underwent a fitness test in Mumbai today in front of coach Gary Kirsten and trainer Nitin Patel. "His return will bring a lot of relief," Dhoni said. "Not only can he provide good starts but he can stay put till the end of the innings."

India's batsmen had struggled against the short ball on lively tracks in England during the World Twenty20 in June as well as in the following ODI series in the Caribbean, but Dhoni disagreed when asked if the problem would persist. "The last time it happened was in the World Twenty20, where you hardly have time to adjust as you look to go after the bowler. What happens in a 50-over game is you can pick and choose. In Twenty20 you see it as an opportunity to score runs."

Another reason Dhoni wasn't bothered about opponents using a short-pitched attack was the presence of Rahul Dravid in the top order. "It is good to have players who have faced similar conditions and been under pressure. Guys like Rahul, who bats at No.3, are an asset to the side," Dhoni said. "In South Africa, where the conditions help the fast bowlers, he is the kind of batsman who is suited to deal with the situation."

Report from Rediff

Match-fixing has returned to haunt Pakistan cricket with the parliamentary committee on sports summoning PCB chief Ejaz Butt, captain Younus Khan and coach Intikhab Alam to seek explanation for the team's Champions Trophy [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=champions+trophy) ] loss to Australia [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=australia) ] after allegations of deliberate underperformance.
http://im.rediff.com/cricket/2009/oct/06younus.jpgA senior parliamentarian, who heads the national assembly standing committee on sports, has accused the team of deliberately losing to Australia in the Champions Trophy in a group match.
Jamshed Khan Dasti said the standing committee would summon Butt, Younus and Alam shortly to explain the team's performance in the Champions Trophy.
"There is evidence that the team lost the match to Australia on purpose. It underperformed. Then against New Zealand [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=new+zealand) ] also there are signs the team didn't want to win," Dasti alleged.
"We have been told by some respected and senior people and we are also trying to collect evidence that there might have been some hanky panky in the match against Australia and New Zealand," Dasti claimed.
Pakistan's last-ball defeat to Australia put India out of the Champions Trophy while their defeat to New Zealand in the semifinal came as a surprise to many.
Dasti lashed out at Butt and the team for disappointing the nation.
"I can say we lost to Australia on purpose. And the team's performance against New Zealand was zero. We will get to the bottom of this whole affair and find out the truth the nation must know the truth of what happened in South Africa [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=south+africa) ]," he said.
Dasti said the standing committee would not allow corruption in cricket.
"We want to see changes in the board and Butt must go because as it is he is too old for this job," he added.
Dasti said he would issue a notification in two days time summoning the captain and coach and board Chairman to explain themselves before the committee.
"We have heard a lot about match fixing allegations some people are telling us things and we also sense team didn't perform well on purpose. So we want to find out the truth," he said.
Neither Younus nor Intikhab were available for their reaction to the serious allegations by Dasti which is likely to set off a whole new controversy in Pakistan cricket.

National coach Intikhab Alam accused the Indian media of triggering and fanning the match-fixing debate and said the Pakistan Cricket Board should decide whether there is any need to restore cricketing ties with a neighbour which is "hell bent" on damaging them.

"The Indian media should be ashamed of itself for creating these stories about our team being involved in match-fixing in the Champions Trophy," a furious Alam said in an interview.

"All this stuff about our team being involved in match-fixing started because of a report in some Indian newspapers and since then they have carried out a relentless campaign to defame us," he said.

"Maybe it is time we also reviewed our cricket relations with India and decided whether we really need to play them when they are hell bent on trying to damage us," said Alam, who had coached the Punjab Ranji team in India.

Alam was shocked that a parliamentarian like Jamshed Dasti, who heads the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports, made a noise on the basis of the reports in India.

"The truth is that it is hard for the Indians to digest the fact that this year in two major tournaments their team, whom they tagged as favourites, was eliminated in the first round and our team not only won the Twenty20 World Cup but also reached the semi-final of the Champions Trophy," he said.

"It is hard for them to accept that we did much better than their team in the Twenty20 World Cup and Champions Trophy," he said.

Alam said it was shameful that although the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit had expressed no concerns whatsoever, the Indian media was creating all sorts of stories.

"They even came up this story that myself and Younis Khan have been sacked. I don't know from where they got this story. It is laughable because our board has full confidence in me and the captain," he said.

Alam also hit out at Jamshed Dasti stating he should be very careful while giving statements on cricket matters.

"Without any evidence or proof how can he make such allegations?" he said.

Dasti had accused the Pakistani team of throwing their match against Australia.

Alam said if the National Assembly Committee asked him to attend any hearing to discuss the Champions Trophy performances he would definitely go.

"I'll go because we have nothing to hide. We played bad cricket and lost the semi-final, that is all. We just need to learn from our mistakes," he said.

KARACHI: Barely hours after his statement that the Pakistan cricket team threw away their Champions Trophy matches, Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports Jamshed Dasti did a complete volte-face and said he never accused the side of being involved in match-fixing.

Dasti, whose statement created a stir last night, claimed he never said Pakistan was involved in match-fixing and his word have been misunderstood by everyone.

"I never said that Pakistani players were involved in any match-fixing against Australia or New Zealand. What I was trying to say has been completely misunderstood by everyone," Dasti said.

He claimed all he wanted to say was that some people had called him up and told him about their concerns that Pakistan might have deliberately lost their matches to Australia and New Zealand.

"What I was trying to say was that the Standing Committee is also concerned by these reports and it is fair to hold an inquiry into the allegations and for this purpose we intend to call the captain, coach and the Chairman of the (Pakistan Cricket) Board to a hearing soon," Dasti said.

He, however, continued his criticism of PCB and said the committee was unanimous that until Ejaz Butt was removed as Chairman of the board, there could be no improvement in Pakistan cricket.

India had a hand in Pakistan's defeat: Pak minister (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/series-tournaments/champions-trophy-2009/top-stories/India-had-a-hand-in-Pakistans-defeat-Pak-minister/articleshow/5094578.cms)

KARACHI: A senior Sindh minister on Tuesday accused India of influencing umpires to get Pakistan ousted from the Champions Trophy semifinal in South Africa.

Muhammad Ali Shah, the minister for Sports and a member of the Pakistan Cricket Board governing council, suspected India's role in the sub-standard umpiring, leading to Pakistan's defeat against New Zealand.

"Definitely, it is clear that India were miffed at not qualifying for the semi-finals after Pakistan lost to Australia and they took their revenge in their own way. They influenced the umpires to favour New Zealand," Shah said.

Australian umpire Simon Taufel had wrongly adjudged Umar Akmal leg-before-wicket at a crucial stage of the match and even admitted to the mistake and apologised later.

Shah said he would not refrain from pressing the PCB to see that the International Cricket Council impose at least a one-year ban on Taufel.
