I am in the process of installing broadband in my apartment in Warsaw. They are providing a 5MBPS broadband connection, but it is only wired. Now I need to get a wireless router so that I can enjoy connectivity everywhere (especially in bedroom ;) ).

So any suggestions on which brand of routers to use? I am looking at linksys as they are more readily available.
Also how do I setup security (WAP/WEP) on the router? I will have two laptops and my phone connected to wifi all the time so I do not want my connection to be used by someone else.

I use Linksys and it is pretty good :thumbup1:

Router configuration is through the browser so no need to install additonal software for router administration.

There is an option to put the WEP key in the router config. When your laptop tries to connect to a wireless network it will ask for the key.

It is pretty simple and your ISP should be able to help you in configuration.

Hmm, let me try. Calling the ISP is big hassle. Most of them do not understand English, so I will have to do it myself.

I have linksys..its pretty darn good..

get a 802.11g router not the 802.11b. 11g give you 54 Mbps. I typically dont put any SSID and also disable the broadcast of it. I do make is secure though using the keys.

Depending on your machine you can choose from..
WEP
WPA
AES
TKIP

AES offers stronger encryption technology and is the right choice (assuming all of the devices on your network support it). However, TKIP is also strong and tends to be

This is the limit of obsession with "g" :D

Did you face any problem??

I too want to setup linksys at my home, is this some rocket science, I have airtel broadband connection with a modem, but want to use wifi for laptop.

No problems from Linksys. Just put in the installation cd and follow the instructions. Up and running in 10 minutes.

You will not face this problem with Airtel I think as they provide dynamic IP i believe. I did face a problem with my ISP here in Poland. They have allocated one fixed IP to me and adding this router was adding another IP address. So once I opened internet, I was automatically taken on the ISP site and they automatically reassigned the IP address to this router.

Nothing technical, yesterday tried to configure linksys router with airtelbroadband connection, and after little bit maatha-pachchi, I did it successfully. The only thing want to share is putting airtel modem in bridge mode, the airtel modem acts as router and DHCP server too. Putting the modem in bridge mode makes it only act as a modem and not as a router and DHCP server. Your wireless router is now the new router and DHCP server. So 192.168.1.1 now points to your wireless router and you will not be able to access the modem's admin screen any more. :)

just my 2c worth...
avoid WEP, its dead technology.
prefer WPA or WPA2 if your router supports it.
WEP can be broken in few seconds...

There have been incidents reported of thugs driving on streets breaking into WEP keys of any WLs in range...

Linksys is a good brand recently taken over by Cisco for good...
