The president of the West Indies Cricket Board has attacked the ICC's decision to remove Steve Bucknor from umpiring in the Perth Test as being an "extreme" reaction.

In a letter to ICC president Ray Mali, Julian Hunte compared the situation to the way the ICC handled a similar complaint lodged by the WICB during West Indies' tour to Australia in 2005. "The ICC's reaction by Dave Richardson [the ICC's cricket manager] was to acknowledge that errors were made but to insist that 'the overall standard of umpiring has improved in recent years, particularly with the advent of the elite panel'.

"It would be interesting to know what made this situation any different." The match referee during that series was Mike Procter, who is again at the centre of the storm following the Sydney Test.

Hunte has asked Mali to provide information to the WICB to enable it to consider what action it might want to take. It has asked for copies of all communication between the ICC and Bucknor, the ICC and other parties and the report of the match referee.

"There is no question that even the best umpires make mistakes," Hunte concluded. "They are human and there are circumstances which may affect their judgement. What worries us is whether the action of the ICC in the case of Bucknor might create even more problems for the ICC and international cricket down the line."

The ICC's move was also slammed by Clive Lloyd, the former West Indian captain and match referee. "You wonder what confidence this gives umpires," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I don't think anybody is out there to cheat anybody. The umpires I have had, particularly at ICC level, have been excellent. They are people who are very honest and who I trust implicitly. Every time something goes against you it doesn't mean the guy is cheating. Nobody is infallible. We all make mistakes - we have to accept it as that. That has always been part of cricket - we have to accept the decision and move on."

WTF ....

Bucknor is an incompetent umpire and is not eligible to be officiating cricket matches at international level.

Some human errors are acceptable, but Bucknor has made BLUNDERS and that too with amazing regularities.

ICC should have removed him from the elite panel long time ago. If the ICC can't kick him out then we have to take things into our own hands.

:swear:

Those who think Bucknor should not be sacked can shove his limped dick up theirs :hammer1:

British media slams ICC for removing Bucknor (http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/007200801091504.htm)

London (PTI): British media on Wednesday slammed ICC for sacking Steve Bucknor from the Perth Test, saying it was an act of appeasement of the cash-rich Indian cricket board and it will seriously compromise ICC's authority.

"Cricket's rulers caved in to pressure and intimidation from the sport's biggest powerhouse by reaching a shabby compromise that ensures India's tour of Australia will go on whatever the consequences to their authority," screamed a column in Daily Mail.

"It is simply that India, who generate more money from cricket than all the other Test nations combined, are indisputably running the world game, not the governing body," Paul Newman wrote.

"How can the ICC decide to sack Bucknor from this series, even though he had a shocker, when their own Standard Playing Conditions dictate that 'neither team will have the right of objecting to an umpiring appointment'? he asked.

"Bucknor deserved better than to be ruthlessly tossed aside by the ICC at the whim of India's powerbrokers."

The newspaper also carried another column which said the ICC has dumped a black umpire to appease a team accused of harbouring a "racist".

"A shudder must have run through every white coat, every match official in every sport, as Bucknor became the scapegoat," Paul Hayward wrote.

Show spine not crawl before BCCI: McGrath to ICC (http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Jan92008/sports2008010945675.asp)

Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath has lashed out at International Cricket Council (ICC) for crawling before the BCCI and replacing umpire Steve Bucknor from Perth test under pressure from rich Indian Board.

McGrath, one of the prominent players to have been signed by the BCCI for its domestic Indian Premier League (IPL), said ''he was shocked to see the way ICC has given in to Indian board's pressure and dumped Steve Bucknor from next week's Perth Test.''

'The Age' quoted McGrath saying, that it was ridiculous to change the umpire just because he had a bad game and the former pacer urged ICC to show some spine and leadership instead of bowing down to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ''I think it is sad and disappointing that it gets to the stage where you have a bad game and they are calling for your head,'' he said.

''What is there, eight international umpires on the panel? And if a couple of teams aren't happy with umpires then all of a sudden you have got one to choose from,'' he said.

McGrath did not agree with ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed's view that World body took the "practical step" just to take tension out of the series and was quoted as saying ''I think that (it) is ridiculous, that is why we have the ICC to control things rather than individual countries,'' he said.

:swear:

Would he say the same if Aussies had lost the test by bad decisions ?

all seem to be BS arguments to me...

Clive Lloyd is talking about Bucknor being honest:

"I don't think anybody is out there to cheat anybody. The umpires I have had, particularly at ICC level, have been excellent. They are people who are very honest and who I trust implicitly. Every time something goes against you it doesn't mean the guy is cheating. Nobody is infallible. We all make mistakes - we have to accept it as that."

bhaiyya morey no one is claiming he has cheated n no one is doubting his integrity one bit. All that's been said is that he has made too many mistakes (proven fact) and its too risky to continue him any further as its critical to avoid any more mistakes at least on this high profile tour. That's why there is no option but to sack him for now... Everyone respects Bucknor and appreciates his past umpiring abilities.

n London media is only trying to inflame the situation further with silly commenst like:
their own Standard Playing Conditions dictate that 'neither team will have the right of objecting to an umpiring appointment'?

arey sootiyanandan the board has appealed for changing bucknor, not the team.

"ICC has dumped a black umpire to appease a team accused of harbouring a "racist".

kitne velle log hain yaar is duniya mei...

huhh... at this moment I've decided to immediately stop wasting any more time on reading/writing/talking/thinking about this ridiculously silly and shameful issue/game.
