Hello all,
I got this in an e-mail and I found that this is really worth sharing with all of you guys : those are proud of their motherland and those who are not.

This is a post from Madhu Trehan, who is a writer for The Outlook, she got a letter from an Indian settled in the US who cared more abt what others think of India rather than helping the cause.

Chaitanya (Chet) From US wrote :

Hi Madhu

I have read your articles ever since I was a kid and you were at India Today. You have often come across as a balanced person not prone to Gandhi nonsense, until now.

I live in a White Nation (the US) and have never felt like a second class citizen. Only a blind and a deaf person can compare the pride of a US citizen with the indignity of being an India. A US citizen trusts his government, knows his/her death will never go unpunished, while an Indian solider is there to die.

Elite is a bad word in India because 95% of our country lives in abject poverty. Next time ask the waiter in Taj who served you the Rs 400 drink, how much he makes in a month. The Durban who opens the door for you, ask him how much he makes? I bet his monthly salary will be around your dinner bill. Shame on you and journalists like you who have failed India in the past with coloured reporting and are doing so now. They should feel ashamed. Rather than calling bush names, maybe we should hang our heads in shame on PM's like Vajpayee who is too old to walk, too much of a coward to protect his people.

Maybe, just maybe, the day people like us (the English educated hence smarter) start feeling ashamed enough we will start making changes in India rather than just exploiting our servants and labour class. It anguishes me to read this national character articles. A nation that cannot feed its people (a la Orrisa) has no character, a nation whose children move around naked (Mumbai) has no reason to feel proud, a nation whose elected reps call religious riots "opposite reaction" has no future.

Once again, shame on you and all of India. I am ashamed to be an Indian and shame on you for suggesting anything else.

Chet
(Chaitanya)

I will answer your letter point by point.
- Your name. You can be Chet or Jet, stay away from the sun, fake an American accent, but you will never be able to run away from Chaitanya. He will always be there even though you hate him today.

- Gandhi, whom you hold in such contempt, despite all his controversial behavior, is largely responsible for the fact that there is no white boot on a part of your anatomy today.

- You live in a white nation but you are not white and never will be. You can fool yourself to believe that you are not treated as a second class citizen. You choose to forget the Dot Busters, the Sikh who was killed because he looked foreign and rampant racism. How many times a week do you have to explain where you are from and spend your time EXPLAINING India to Americans? I cringe to think what you say to them about India. We do not need spokesman such as you. You will never be able to share a good desi joke with any of your new friends. If you can't laugh together, you cannot understand each other. You will always be an alien.

- Yes, we are economically poor compared to US but we do not have to suffer the highest rate of teenage pregnancies, kids coming into schools and killing students and teachers, the highest rate of suicide among college students, alienated parents and children, lonely old people dumped into old age homes, drugs being offered to eight year olds (as my daughter was when she was in the UN school in New York), serial marriages and divorces. The US had a president who was senile and deaf (Reagan), one who turned out to be a serial sex offender (Clinton), and now you have one who didn't know the heads of state of major countries and ignored warnings of a terrorist attack months before it took place. The US is responsible for massacres in Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Chile and the list goes on. The rest of the world does not view America with the rose-coloured glasses you have been brainwashed by the US media to see thorough. And, how much does a waiter in Jean Georges restaurant in Trump International Hotel in New York make compared to the price of the drink he is serving? The labour class in exploited all over the world.

- You seem to very upset that I am pointing out we have a national character to be ashamed of and we should do something about it. Your insistence that we stay ashamed and do nothing about it is perhaps to make it easier for you to live in a country where the only religion is to hang out at malls and accumulate consumer items you don't really need but have been diktated by advertising to buy that, to keep the US economy going. It is not by accident that Americans are flocking to yoga and meditation classes to buy happiness.

- You have done well to leave a country you are ashamed of. Call yourself an American but sooner or later your disguise and American Halloween costume will frighten you enough to get rid of it.

- I love America's energy and have good friends there. New York is a centre for an enormous outpouring of creativity and imaginative thinking. Every country has its own problems. It is for the people who belong there to take responsibility for change.

- If you are so far removed from India, ask yourself why you are so anguished with my article. Chaitanya is raising his head, Chet is in trouble.

Regards,
Madhu Trehan

I hope that this really ignited somewhere in your hearts that pride of being an Indian. I am proud to be an Indian and will always be the same.. I hope to hear the same response from all Indians here who come and read this...

Somehow I go with Chet, Oct 19 2009 will not come again, I am no more interested in having unity in diversity, rich culture, etc etc. What I want, a pollution free environment, better food, education, medical services, good transport system etc etc. I can't feel proud to be an Indian just by having some invisible values. I want to live a better life and if India can't give that to me I am not proud to be an Indian. I have seen in US everybody has their national flag hosted out their homes because their country is giving them a lot and that's why they love their country. Jai US.

Though TDS doesn’t leaves much of a choice, its commendable to be an honest taxpayer. We are from that selective breed of citizens who feels by paying taxes honestly we are released from our whole and sole duty and we can come up with a list of expectations and cry over it.

Even in lighter vein, nobody is asking to offer Ram Dulari, but there is one more duty to be performed on regular basis before we dish out the list of expectations – the duty to be informed – the duty to demand truth and accountability.

When was the last time we did that?

Manish Asija is the name of the person who gave 180 degree shift to the situation of living in Firozabad city famous for bangles and glass items. In 90s this city was in worst condition. Manish Asija got elected for NagarPalika chairman of this city and with due to his hard work, you won't believe, you can't see rain water on the roads after 30 minutes of rain, every road is of cement, every lamp post has a lamp and electricity supply with it. Garbage is collected before 10 am on daily basis. Every park is in good condition. City is in better shape because of him. Now please don't ask me to be a Manish Asija. He is a big business man who is well settled. Don't compare me with him.

Bottom line is you can get a better living here in this country itself, we are not poor. I am just asking for that. So please avoid rona-dhona of asking what you did for this country, any firozabad citizen didn't anything for Manish.

I guess this sort of answers your question. Unless the majority can vote without caste bias we cannot hope for improvement.

People deserve the leaders they get. Pukis deserve military rule and if we elect our leaders based on cast then we deserve the fcuking corrupt politicians

BTW KD bhai always keep in mind that we are a nation that is only 62 years old

America was formed in 1799 i.e. 210 years ago

now can you compare both the nations from any view point whatsoever

BTW we are progressing at a speed higher than US must have when it was 62 years old

BTW all your complaints directly or indirectly emerge from corruption....whatever taxes that should go for the betterment of the nation are going in the pockets of some bosdika neta....tow mere bhai if you want something out of a nation then you have to give something to it.......like enter politics and stay clean from corruption........alike Gandhiji........who gave his whole life for the nation

Our talented lot of youngsters keep migrating to foriegn countries and bash Indian situations rather than trying to improve it by staying in India.......just by giving taxes you cannot say thats all you can do and expect a miracle overnight ........you have to pour in some physical efforts......maybe at a micro level :)

How many social workers do we need? aren't there are enough politicians? aren't there are more than enough NGOs? Not everyone can join politics or do social service.

The main hindrance to growth is corruption. And this will need to change through change of mindset. Unless citizens like us who have seen the world start demanding and start asking questions, status quo will be maintained. So never ever silence a voice which is asking a fair treatment for itself by asking back what have you done for the country !

All a common man needs to do for a country is to live life honestly in what ever profession he is in. Man, a common man is not asking for the moon. He just wants gas connection on time, land registry without hassles and justice from court in weeks not decades, ambulance on time, good medical treatment , good education etc.

Inka kya maine achar daalna hain. Aur agar kuch bolo to log poochenge ki aapne desh ke liye kya kiya? g&&d marayi, is desh me paida ho gaya yahi kya kam bada kaam kiya hain maine  jo log desh ki capital ko hi sahi infrastructure nahi de paa rahe wo desh ko kya denge. Well said GA, but can’t agree in its entirety.

You are right in saying the main hindrance is corruption. But who is corrupt? Politician? No. We are fed with the cliché that corruption is equal to Gandhi topi. I am not saying that politicians are not corrupt, but the source of corruption is your privileged common man. Privileged common man, because he needs everything hassle free, but cannot be accountable to anything, leave alone asking what he did for the country.

One common man is in line for gas connection, another common man is giving bribe for jumping the queue and getting early connection. Hassel free land registration? 99% (wild guess, no source) of common man do not disclose the true value of property to avoid tax and stamp duty. Same story with court, ambulance, medical and education. One common man gives the bribe, other common inside the system takes the bribe and both the common man blames corrupt politician, who is sitting at the helm of affairs, for the failure of entire system which is made of a series of common man.

Common man comes out in street to light candles and give interview to show how devastated he is by terrorist attack, but would not go to vote even if given paid leave from work.

Common man organizes themselves to keep a certain religion or caste out of their housing community, but cannot organize for getting 24 hours water / electricity or systematic garbage / sewage disposal for the same housing community.

Common man organize themselves to burn down home, businesses, mass killings in communal riots; but cannot organize themselves for a corruption free (forget India) their own panchayat or municipal area.

You are right, we have enough of social worker or NGOs. Now, what we need is common man with a spine, who doesn’t offer one dime in bribery and fights for his rights. But then common man wants everything hassle free.

Common man is asking for moon if he wants everything in platter but cannot be asked what he did for the country.

Saint Bhai aapke vichar saint jaise hi hain jiska main samman karta hoon, e.g. It is not allowed to put construction material in open in Noida and Gr. Noida, now ask these bloody law makers where can a person put all this. No place is available to put the same, in the last that person need to bribe the authority and gets the NOC for construction. Could you please suggest what that person should do, who has already spent 20-25 lakhs hard earned money in gaining the land and construction material. Should he fight to the system? Should he wait for the justice for 10-15 years?

In short avoid using this word "Mera Bharat Mahan" and look into the eyes of the person in front of you who says this, because you have enough reasons to oppose him.

Phir har vakil ko fees mein ek Kela milega :D

BTW jokes apart .......... I completely agree with Saint Bhai ........however the main corruption flows from the men in power and what common man faces in his daily life is the tip of the Ice Berg

E.g. The hirarchy of a corrupt Police Department starts from the Chief Minister........then a Police Commissioner......then other police subordinates........till it reaches the common hawaldaar who collects the Hafta........and takes bribes for even registering an FIR ......all this bribe and hafta money is collected and divided in the hirarchy upto the CM.........I have heard this from a Police Inspector himself
So men at the top need to be non corrupt to stop this hirerchy

However there is now one weapon in the hands of the common man ..its the Right to Information Act........if any government department does not do work according to prescribed time periods you can always take them to task with this Act instead of giving bribe :)

One more way is to intimate the Anti Corruption Bureau.........set a trap..........and then offer bribe.........iss method se kafi corrupt logon ki lag gayi hai

I have seen change coming with youngsters opposing bribe at Government departments........but it will take time to turn the table completely

BTW I recommend that there should be strict penal provision for corruption like e.g. minimum 5 years imprisonment and a blacklist should be prepared for such people which should be easily publically available......and such people should not be employed by anyone whosoever on basis of such black list ..........tab inko ghode lagenge

BTW some days ago I was watching a show of Baba Ramdev......he suggested a splendid idea to stop corruption.......he said that notes of 1000 and 500 should be stopped from printing.........and whatever notes are in circulation should be called back by the RBI........this way if one wishes to give even 10 lakh as bribe then he has a big problem of carrying such a heavy amount of notes without being watched........this will end even the Black Money problem........but this will check only the macro level corruption. see this http://bharat-swabhiman.com/en/remove-higher-currency-denominations-swami-ramdev/

BTW topic nikla hi hai tow Mayawati ko gali dedu.......Mayawati ki mummy ki ankh........dengu ke state ki CM hai..........sali 550 crore ka Ambedkar park bana rahi hai Noida UP mein .........UP mein logon ko khane / rehne ke wande hain aur ye apne putale bana rahi hai
ye dekho.....http://www.attachowk.com/Noida-Samajik-Parivartan%20-Sangrahalay.html .......shukr hai Supreme Court ne stay laga diya iss kaam pe

If you want to improve the situation you should enter places of power.......not only politics but others too......e.g. be a judge and pass a judgement against corruption which then becomes the law....or make a strict law on corruption as stated earlier....just by opposing bribe in day to day life this thing wont stop completely ......it will only make a micro difference..........thats my take on this issue

As far as Supreme Court is concerned yeah agreed .......however how does Election Commission run the country ?

In Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections 27% candidates had criminal records .......what can the Election Commission do to stop this ......nothing.....and these candidates are the ones who are the most corrupt
